A busy time at welsh club of the year!
September is traditionally regarded as one of the busiest months in the golfing calendar, and that has certainly been true here at Wales' oldest Golf Club. As well as a healthy number of visiting golfers, and societies, we have also hosted Captain's away days, Rotary Days, Club Matches, and Finals Day. The 7 twin en-suite rooms that comprise our 'Dormy House' have gone from strength to strength, particularly at weekends which were close to capacity throughout the month.
There were some notable Golfing achievements this month, John Morris won the Scratch Cup for a record 10th time, 25 years after his first title, and the Rabbits section won the Rabbits league for the 1st time since the 1970's by defeating Haverfordwest at home in the last game of the season, so many congratulations to them.
Gethin Evans drove in as the 2015/16 Club Captain this month, Gethin brings a wealth of sporting knowledge to the Club, and along with Richard Ormond and the Catering team he has some exiting plans for social events at the Club in the near future, so watch this space!
We are also looking for volunteers to help with our ever expanding Junior Section, if you feel you would be suited to this, please inquire to the club office.
Golf Course Update
We have received some great comments about the condition of the course during the year, and the fast true greens in particular. In order to maintain the course in great condition various winter maintenance work has to take place and this started at the end of September with tining, seeding and top dressing of the greens, in addition to more intensive work on the 8th green to remove an area of excessive thatch (a build up of dead organic matter just below the greens surface). This green will be back in play again later this week.
Winter Mats
We have introduced Winter mats on some of the tees. There are 2 new ones on the short 6th and 12th,which are both very different in their design and make up, we would be very interested to hear feedback as to which one you prefer playing from.
Work will start early November on building new tees on the 10th, 16th and 17th holes which should all further enhance the appearance and playabilty of those holes.
Winter Rules
Winter Rules will commence from the 1st November with preferred lies on 'closely mown areas' (all areas of the course through the green cut to fairway height or less). Simply mark the ball, clean it if you wish and place it within 6 inches not nearer the hole. Certain 'hot spot' areas that have suffered from a lot of play and require resting will be marked as Ground under repair, please drop your ball out of these areas to the nearest point not nearer the hole.
More divot bags have been ordered and these will be made available as soon as they arrive, however please continue to carry divot mix where bags are available and fill divots where necessary. Tenby continues to be a great place to play Winter Golf with generally no trolley and buggy bans, course closed signs, temporary greens, soggy fairways or plugged balls!
Evening golf
With the nights drawing in and evening golf proving difficult it we are planning to provide lighting on the driving range and approaches so that Members and Visitors can still hone their swings and hit balls into the night sky even if they can't get onto the course. We hope that work will start on this project in the next few weeks.
