Members of Tenby away day report
A group of members from Tenby, including a number of committee members recently went away on a golf trip.
The trip was a three day outing to Oswestry. The first day we played the championship course at Hawkstone which was in breathtakingly excellent condition and Piers won. Second day is an annual tournament called the Oswestrian Golf Day playing for the 'Holbache Shield' for male individuals and the Guinevere bowl for ladies plus a team prize as well as a scratch cup called the 'Willcox Financial Cup'.
There were 38 players and it was played at Mile End GC in Oswestry which also was playing well. On the final day we all played Oswestry which was playing hard and fast and Steve Sutcliffe won.
Piers won the Holbache Trophy with 41 points and we won the team prize as we scored 125 points stableford best 3 out of 4, 17 under par! We won by 1 point! Loz Phillips won the Scratch Cup. A great time was had by all.
Guess who the bandit was?
Mixed Events: Usher Cup - Mixed Trophy Sunday 12th July 2015
In front of Tenby golf club there is a bench in memory of a lovely lady called Kathleen Usher. She was captain of the ladies in 1959 and 1968. I have a strong memory of her presenting her mixed trophy to my daughter Katie and Mervyn Tucker over twenty years ago. Today we played for her trophy. A foursomes Stableford competition, with the course in such lovely condition, it should have been easy scoring. However, for most of us the points were not easy to find today.
Pam and Steve Cole, and John Ball and Trevayne Keohane managed a two each on the 6th, and Rob Hall and Sarah Waring, and Mervyn Tucker and Heather K. Morgan won their entry fee back in the bag draw. Actually the highlight of my game was seeing Vicky Burks doing an 'Olive Oil' to stretch down from a height to get a ball out of the side of a high bunker. It shot out across the 14th green to nestle in the grass at the edge. Her partner, Neil Evans, and then chipped straight to hit the flag and drop in the hole. Amazing!
Sadly David T. Morgan and Laura McQueen got pushed out of the prizes on the back nine by John Ball and Trevayne Keohane who had 36 points. Second with 38 points, and leaders in the clubhouse till the last pair came in, were Pam and Steve Cole. But winners of the Usher Trophy for 2015, with an unbelievable 42 points, were Allan Morton and Fair Ball. Allan thanked Heather for running the event and his playing partners. We must also thank Tom for his work in the Pro Shop getting the cards out, Laura McQueen for helping with the scoring, and Emma and her team for the excellent catering.
The next mixed event is the Friday Friendly Foursomes on 31st July. Sign up now on the computer if you would like to take part. Then on August 16th the Morgan Tucker Greensomes is a mixed Open event this year. Forms are available in the clubhouse or on the Tenby Golf Club website. Members will be able to sign up on the computer as usual.
The Friendly Foursomes on the calendar for 7th August has been cancelled.
