Members news

TENBY Golf Club member Sam Morgan got the experience of a lifetime when he played Ryder Cup course Hazeltine with Rich Beem

American Beem was the winner of the 2002 US PGA Championship at the famed track in Chaska, Minnesota, where he held off a charging Tiger Woods on a dramatic final day.

Sam, a sports reporter with The Sun, went on the trip courtesy of Sky Sports. He said:

"It was surreal to be hitting balls next to a major champion on the course that changed his life.

"I remember watching that final round 14 years ago and it was spine-tingling to walk in the footsteps of those who made history.

"Rich was a class guy and loaded with opinions - it was just a shame he had to leave early so that we couldn't play all 18 holes with him.

"The members at the club had no airs and graces, couldn't have done enough to help and were passionate about belonging to a club so steeped in the legend of the game.

"It was an honour to play there - I just wish I could have made more than one birdie!"

Thought of the week

Drive for show, putt for dough?

This is one of golf's great debates: given the choice, what would you rather be - a great putter or a great driver?

Without wishing to influence your vote - and you can vote below on our website - we'd take a guess that most of you would go with the former; that if you are a confident putter and better than most, your scores will be far greater.

Others may say you could be the best putter in the world, but it counts for nothing if you're chipping out sideways from the fairway rough all day long - therefore accuracy and length off the tee would be preferable.

There's no right or wrong answer, of course, although how good does it feel when you bomb one off the tee? Actually, it feels pretty good when you hole back-to-back 30-foot birdie putts, too.

Vote on what you'd rather be, we'd be interested to know. Vote Now
